Q - My son’s Speech and Language Therapist has recommended that we use ‘Objects of Reference’, what are these? Answer

Q - My 10-year old son is diagnosed with autism and has a severe learning disability. He has self-injured by hitting his head and banging his head on objects for many years. Although his school have tried many things to help with this problem, nothing has really made much difference. His school have now written to me saying that they would like an applied behaviour analyst to help with the problem, and the behaviour analyst has written to me saying that she would like to carry out an “experimental functional analysis” to help her understand why my son self-injures and to help her develop an intervention plan. I’m a bit worried because the procedure seems to involve deliberately putting my son into situations which might lead to him self-injuring. Should I agree to this procedure? Answer

Q - My son is diagnosed with high-functioning autism. He started to speak at quite a young age, but his school want a speech and language therapist to assess him. He often finds meeting new people difficult. Is he likely to get any benefit from seeing the therapist? Answer
